Why “A Voice in the Desert”?
From “The Voice of the Southwest” to “A Voice in the Desert”, our publication retains the spirit of the original while better reflecting Catholic life and culture here in our very unique Diocese.
Our publication, like our Diocese, has never attempted to represent perspectives and news from the entirety of the American Southwest. Our former name, “The Voice of the Southwest”, doesn’t quite capture the Catholic, or even religious, angle of our paper. It could be the name of any number of publications in this neck of the country.
And we’re not looking to be like the average secular publication, because an authentic faith life is anything but average. This is also why we’ve undertaken this migration to Substack, which offers a vibrant, intelligent community of readers, writers, and thinkers. It is my hope and goal that this site reflects the joys, trials, and beauty of being Catholic, and that our writers heed the call to foster and spread the Faith among the peoples of this Diocese (and beyond!).
Enter John the Baptist - I can’t recall who first had the idea, but both Bishop Wall and Fr. Mitchell Brown raised the possibility of adopting him as a patron and model for the Voice going forward. The “desert” referenced in the name “Voice in the Desert” can literally mean the arid, beautiful landscapes which we in the Diocese of Gallup call home. But a desert can also figuratively be a place in our hearts and souls where we wander, cast forever from the Garden of Eden, striving like the ancient Israelites to reach a paradise, to attain Heaven.
I hope that this publication may prove to be an oasis for you; a refreshing place to rest and rejuvenate your faith.
